Abstract
The purpose of this study was to describe the health problems of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment after mastectomy.
The qualitative research method was used to study the health problems of breast cancer patients during chemotherapy. During an open-ended interview, subjects were encouraged to ¡¯think aloud¡¯ about their health problems. A sample of 34 women who participated in the ¡¯breast cancer self-help group¡¯ completed an open-ended interview.
The results of qualitative analysis were as follows two major causes of health problems are mastectomy and chemotherapy treatment.
Health problems exclusive to mastectomy were arm and axilla discomfort on the same side of the body as the breast that was removed.
Health problems exclusive to chemotherapy treatment were gastro-intestinal discomforts, general physical weakness, bone and ankle discomfort, and skin problems.
Health problems to both mastectomy and anticancer chemotherapy were physical intimacy with their husbands and insomnia.
Findings will provide the empirical data for chemotherapy administration, nursing interventions and provision of patient information.
